As we draw near to the beginning of fall, it is now time to think about how to care for plants going into their dormancy period. As my first gardening tip to you, I would recommend that you think about fertilizing your plants sometime before the end of September, as their last boost of nutrients this year. Also, as the temperature cools, if you want to spray your yard for weeds, September/October would be the time to do so.

t is also an excellent time to add any kind of shrubs or trees to your landscape, since they will require less water and nutrients than other times of the year. Some good shade trees for this area include: Red Maple, River Birch, Tulip Poplar, Nuttall and Shumard Oaks. Also, you may want to consider adding some shrubs, such as Camellias or Sasanquas, to add color in the winter.
